ENVIRONMENT

We take special care that our processes integrate the environmental variable. Our commitment is to carry out sustainable management, optimizing the consumption of natural resources, energy and raw materials, and adopting preventive measures to avoid any type of contamination and contribute to the conservation of the environment. Circular economy, waste recovery and care of water bodies are the three pillars on which we base our actions at the environmental level.

Sustainability Report

ALL OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

In 2023, we promoted environmental care in all our activities. This year, we continue working to keep guaranteeing the water supply, contributing to the protection and improvement of the environment, the promotion of the circular economy and the sustainability of the region.

RECLAIMED WATER

IRRIGATION OF GREEN AREAS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

By using reclaimed water, we are able to reduce the pressure on the resources stored in our reservoirs and guarantee the availability of water in a scenario of resource scarcity, as well as improve the quality of the water bodies in the region. Every year we produce more than 100 hmof reclaimed water both for irrigation of green areas and industrial uses as well as for caring for the environment, returning it to the rivers in the best quality conditions. In this way, the water enjoys a new life.

CLEAN AND RENEWABLE ENERGIES

GOAL 2030: AS MUCH ENERGY PRODUCED AS CONSUMED

We have been generating clean energy for more than a century: this has historically helped us to be more sustainable in our activity. Nowadays, aware of the importance of our consumption, in more initiatives have been developed for the generation of electrical energy through synergistic processes with water management. Currently, we are the company with the highest installed power generation in the Community of Madrid, with a total of 107.33 megawatts thanks to the following facilities:

Thanks to the joint performance of these facilities, in 2021 we broke our historical record for electricity generated. In total 420 million kilowatts hour, equivalent to 87 % of our total consumption. In fact, in February 2021 we broke our historical record for the percentage of energy production over consumption (125 %) and a month later we broke the monthly record for energy production, with more than 43 million kilowatts hour.

Technical cooperation agreement between Canal de Isabel II and UNDESA

Rooted in the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) is in charge of leading the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda worldwide.

The objective of this agreement is to support the Global Network for Sustainable Energy and Water Sustainability by building and enhancing capacities to enable cross-sectoral approaches, in order to accelerate the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Expected achievements with this agreement:

  • Increase capacity of both subnational and national government institutions and relevant stakeholders to effectively manage the water-energy nexus and the links with other SDGs.

  • Improvement of knowledge management and the exchange of best practices on the water-energy nexus and the interrelationship with other SDGs.

  • Improve the promotion and dissemination worldwide of the water-energy nexus and the interrelationship with other SDGs.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

REVALUATING THE WATER CYCLE

We annually produce more than 100 hm3 of reclaimed water, using it to irrigate green areas, wash streets and industrial uses. In addition, we understand wastewater treatment plants as biofactories in which we take advantage of biogas to produce electricity and vehicle fuel, we sanitize sludge for reuse as fertilizers and we recover phosphorus from wastewater to produce 1.5 tons of struvite daily.

NO NEED TO WATER TODAY

With this service you can check the irrigation need in your area at all times. By consulting the need for irrigation based on the rainfall received and expected in your area, you can save a resource as precious as water and, in addition, reduce your bill at the end of the month. Help us take care of water by watering exclusively when necessary.
